Welcome February!

Except in Leap Year, that's the time
When February's Days are twenty-nine

Did you know... Although most years of the modern calendar have 365 days, a complete revolution around the sun takes approximately 365 days and 5 hours, 49 minutes and 16 seconds. Every four years, during which an extra 24 hours have accumulated, one extra day is added to keep the count coordinated with the sun's apparent position.

So why the name Leap Year? In non-Leap Years there is a Leap Day - February 29th, which we "Leap" over and ignore until the "Leap Year" when we add in the day!    It’s been said to think of leap year as the little trick the world uses to make up for lost time.

We don’t know about lost time, but February is a great time to mark your calendar and make sure you don’t miss some important deadlines at Minnesota Masonic Charities:

February 2, 2012 Groundhog Day (we just threw that in for interest…)

February 10, 2012 Postmark deadline for the Signature and Heritage Scholarship applications (check it out)

February 14, 2012 Valentine's Day (a public service reminder for all husbands)

February 25, 2012 The George Washington Annual Dinner (a terrific event -details here)

February 29, 2012 MMC Matching Grant – 2 for 1 – for food shelves: last day for submission by mail (what? Find out here)

DID YOU KNOW…

  • Food shelf use has increased 60 percent since 2000, according to Hunger Solutions Minnesota, a hunger relief organization providing assistance to food shelves.
  • In a report to the Minnesota House Housing Policy and Finance and Public Health Finance Division, it was noted that the number of those needing help from food shelves is only going to grow as the economy continues to show signs of struggle and the recognition is that for some “Food has become a luxury.”

Minnesota Masonic Charities – in acknowledgement of this need – has made available a very special offer for those Lodges and Chapters who are planning to apply for an MMC matching grant for their local community food shelf project: a $2 for $1 match!  For every one dollar raised, MMC will match it with two dollars.

Since December 1, 2011 to date, Fifty-two (52) grants have been awarded with a total of nearly $63,000 distributed to Minnesota food shelves!

This offer is available until March 1, 2012. The need is still great. – why not download an application here. Questions? Call 952-948-6206 and find out how this can work.

We hope you will join Minnesota Masonic Charities and the Minnesota Masonic Historical Society and Museum as we host our annual celebration of President, General, and Most Worshipful Brother George Washington.

Our special program will feature as keynote speaker the Honorable Abraham Lincoln as portrayed by Mr. George Buss of Illinois (shown above.)  Mr. Buss has appeared regularly at numerous performances nationwide.  In addition to his solo Abraham Lincoln, Mr. Buss has partnered with others to perform the famed Lincoln Douglas Debates and House Divided appearing on stage at Ford’s Theater, Gettysburg, many other North American cities, and on C-Span.  He was also featured in the September 2008 issue of Smithsonian Magazine.
Registration and Reception begins at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2012, followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. in Landmark on the Bluffs, 11501 Masonic Home Drive, Bloomington, MN 55437.   (Dinner seating is at 6:15 p.m.)

Seating for this special event is limited, so send in your registration by Wednesday, February 15, 2012.  Fee for this special celebration dinner is $30 per person. Questions may be directed to Deb C. at (952) 948-6206 or deb.cutsinger@mnmasonic.org

THERE IS STILL TIME to submit an application for one of these great scholarships.  Do you know of a worthy candidate?  See more information here.  Download Applications or contact us to request that one (or more) be sent to you by same day mail at 952-948-6004.  Applications must be postmarked by February 10, 2012.
